Tips and tricks
For an even tastier apple crisp, choose firm, slightly tart Quebec apples like Cortland, McIntosh orEmpire. They offer the perfect balance between sweetness and acidity, while retaining a beautiful texture after cooking. For variety, why not mix different varieties of apples in your croustade? This will add depth of flavor and interesting textures beneath the crisp topping.
If you like an even crunchier texture, add a handful of chopped nuts, such as pecans or almonds, to your filling. You can also incorporate a little shredded coconut for an exotic touch.
Looking for an even more gourmet touch? Serve your croustade warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, a drizzle of salted butter caramel or a little crème fraîche. A real delight!
Finally, for a slightly healthier version, you can slightly reduce the amount of sugar in the apples or use unrefined sugar, such as natural brown sugar or maple syrup.
Whether for a comforting dessert, an afternoon snack or a special brunch, apple crisp is always a safe bet - simple to prepare, delicious to eat!
