Funky Apple Basil Spritz

Ingredients

2 cups water

2 cups sugar

1 Quebec Quality apple, peeled and cut into cubes

3 sprigs of basil

Gin

Lemon juice

Quebec sparkling cider

Preparation

  1. In a small pot, heat the water over high heat.
  2.  Add the sugar, apple pieces, and basil sprigs.
  3. Let cool for a few hours in the refrigerator.
  4. Strain the syrup.
  5. Place ice cubes in a glass.
  6. Add 2 oz of gin, 2 oz of syrup, a little lemon juice, and top up with sparkling Quebec cider.
  7. Garnish with a basil leaf and a slice of apple.

Tips and tricks

  • Choose an apple such as Cortland or Honeycrisp for an aromatic, slightly tart syrup that balances well with alcohol.
  • Leaving the water, sugar, apple, and basil mixture to cool in the refrigerator for several hours intensifies the flavors—the longer the syrup infuses, the more flavorful your cocktail will be.
  • Replace the gin with flavored sparkling water or a sweet sparkling cider for an equally festive non-alcoholic version.
