Maple turnip and apple gratin

Ingredients

  • 15 ml (1 tablespoon) butter (for baking dish)
  • 1 l (4 cups) turnips, peeled, mandolin-sliced and cooked
  • 500 ml (2 cups) unpeeled cooking apples, cored and sliced
  • 5 ml (1 teaspoon) salt
  • 60 ml (¼ cup) medium maple syrup
  • 60 ml (¼ cup) butter, cut into small cubes
  • 60 ml (¼ cup) plain breadcrumbs

Preparation

  1. Place rack in middle of oven. Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F).
  2. Butter a 1.5-l (6-cup) baking dish.
  3. Layer 500 ml (2 cups) turnips, then 250 ml (1 cup) apples. Add salt, half the maple syrup and half the butter.
  4. Then line up the remaining turnips and apples, season with salt and add the remaining maple syrup and butter.
  5. Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes.
  6. Sprinkle with breadcrumbs and continue cooking, uncovered, for about 10 minutes, or until apples are tender and breadcrumbs are golden.
