Maple turnip and apple gratin

- 15 ml (1 tablespoon) butter (for baking dish)
- 1 l (4 cups) turnips, peeled, mandolin-sliced and cooked
- 500 ml (2 cups) unpeeled cooking apples, cored and sliced
- 5 ml (1 teaspoon) salt
- 60 ml (¼ cup) medium maple syrup
- 60 ml (¼ cup) butter, cut into small cubes
- 60 ml (¼ cup) plain breadcrumbs
Preparation
- Place rack in middle of oven. Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F).
- Butter a 1.5-l (6-cup) baking dish.
- Layer 500 ml (2 cups) turnips, then 250 ml (1 cup) apples. Add salt, half the maple syrup and half the butter.
- Then line up the remaining turnips and apples, season with salt and add the remaining maple syrup and butter.
- Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes.
- Sprinkle with breadcrumbs and continue cooking, uncovered, for about 10 minutes, or until apples are tender and breadcrumbs are golden.
