Empire is distinguished by its sweet, low-acid taste and dark red color. Its flesh is cream-colored. Ideal as a snack, it is a very firm apple that bruises less easily than other varieties.
Introduced to orchards in 1966, Empire is a cross between McIntosh and Délicieuse Rouge. Some say it combines the best qualities of both varieties.
